We cannot talk about the sanctity of life without understanding the purpose of marriage, for it is in marriage that we are suppose to bring forth life. That does not mean that life created outside of marriage is not to be viewed as sacred. God works through what we give Him and sometimes we make mistakes.
I have thought long and hard about how do I simply state the Purpose of a Christian Marriage. I could walk you through an extensive exogesis on the subject. I could quote the fathers of the church down through the centuries. I could draw on examples from real marriages and film.
I wanted to be short and concise, not drawn out. My desire was to present the topic in a clear and concise manner that was also memorable. So I took it to prayer and as I prayed the answer came to me.
PURPOSE is the best way to sum up and remember the purpose of a Christian marriage.
PURPOSE
Procreation - God calls all married couples to be OPEN to the possibility of children. Go forth and multiply.
Union - It is a loving partnership of living together. We are to die to self and united with our spouse.
Rearing children - Having children is the easy part. We need to raise them in the tenets of God.
Pattern for society - We are to be an example of how society is to interact with each other.
One flesh - It is only in marriage that we are to UNITE in sexual intimacy.
Sacred - Marriage is sacramental and blessed by God. A marriage of 3. Husband-Wife-God
Endless - Marriage is for our entire life. It is a lifelong relationship.
God Bless all of you!!!
Prayer to Understand the Purpose of Marriage
by Bernard Hassan
Dear Lord!
Help us all to understand the true PURPOSE of marriage.
Married or single we relish the sacredness of a man and women united for life.
We see your hand in their evergiving relationships that we have witnessed,
And we ask you to bless all the marriages of people we know and do not know.
Marriage can be a struggle
It is lived in a complex world that often has lost sight of its true PURPOSE.
Please help us to never loose sight of why we have marriage.
And allow us to lean on You and the graces You bestowed on our wedding day.
Heavenly Father we pray for your compasion on our marriages
Lord and Savior Jesus Christ we pray for your strength in our marriage.
Holy Spirit we pray for your wisdom as we raise the children entrusted to us.
We pray all this through the intercession of the most perfect bride, Mary and her faithful husband, Joseph.
--Amen
